Douglas Adams’ classic story of an ordinary guy named Arthur Dent who is rescued by his friend (and secret alien) Ford Prefect when Earth is destroyed to make way for a hyperspace bypass isn’t a multiverse story per se, but it has similar elements. Douglas Adams’ classic story of an ordinary guy named Arthur Dent who is rescued by his friend (and secret alien) Ford Prefect when Earth is destroyed to make way for a hyperspace bypass isn’t a multiverse story per se, but it has similar elements. That’s thanks to the Infinite Improbability Drive, which allows for faster-than-light travel by passing through every point in every possible universe simultaneously, resulting in some really, really weird stuff (the hilariously inconsistent timeline resulting from the many variations of the story also contributes a sense of multiversity craziness). It’s an absurdist’s dream, riffing on every conceivable sci-fi trope and delivering a surprisingly sweet story of a man struggling with his sense of unimportance in an increasingly confusing existence.
